There are a lot of things to consider and research when buying a car, whether it is new or used.
First of all, before you make a major vehicle purchase, you need to drive it and make sure you feel safe and comfortable in it and that it will be adequate for your needs. Avoid making an impulse purchase based on looks or price to find out later that the vehicle is too big or too small.
Secondly, perform a vehicle back round check. Talk to the previous owner if possible or ask the seller for a vehicle history report. Ask questions and be sure you know what you are buying.
When purchasing a used car, I highly recommend having a qualified technician perform a pre buy inspection. A pre buy inspection can reveal problems with the vehicle before it is purchased. Most shops are happy to do this at little or no cost to help their customers make informed decisions. In my experience, if the seller does not want you to have an inspection performed by someone you trust, they are trying to hide something.
Also, make sure you understand the terms and conditions of the warranty, if one is offered. Again, ask questions if something is not clear.
Last years cash for clunkers program took a lot of good used cars off the road which made finding a good one a little more difficult and expensive.
